| Organic agriculture stimulates the development of biological pest management and safe methods of disease control. Organic farming practices preserve and promote topsoil development, a key factor in the prevention of erosion and desertification. Toxic and persistent chemicals are not added to the environment and are kept out of the water supply and food chain. Shade Grown Coffee

- Shade grown coffee is cultivated employing many of the organic practices.
- Coffee is grown under a diverse multi-story canopy of naturally occuring forest trees as well as alternative crop trees such as Avocado, Citrus and Hardwood. These traditional plantations resemble a naturally occurring forest and provide essential habitat for bird species and other wildlife.
- Shade grown coffee plants reduce and elimintae the need for chemical inputs as the trees are naturally fertilized by compost and leaf litter.
- Shade grown coffee plants need less pesticides - The different trees support numerous hungry insect eating birds.
- Shade grown coffee allows farmers to grow alternative crops. This helps stabilize local economies when coffee sales are down.
