But for the small independent farmers, very little of the benefits of this booming global business are ever seen. Purchasing Fair Trade Certified coffee directly benefits these farmers. Fair Trade Certified coffee assures farmers a baseline price for their beans even in times of market bust. That can mean the difference between losing the farm or holding on until times get better. It also helps the farmers gain access to needed loans for working capital. This allows them the chance to expand and improve living situations. Fair Trade Certified coffee also promotes environmentally sound farming practices and high quality coffee production through a variety of education programs. Many Fair Trade Certified farmers provide individualized care of coffee trees and tend to rely on traditional and sustainable horticultural practices. Typically, chemical pesitcides and fertilizers are not used and the coffee is grown under a diversified shade tree forest canopy, preserving the natural habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. |
